An Alternative Ending for The Hours Prologue...

Based on the book "The Hours" written by Michael Cunningham. A novel which describes Virginia Woolf's last hours... how she committed suicide. A Pulitzer Prize Winner.

MY ENDING...

... Leonard waves at the man who is wearing the red jacket, fishing, but the fisherman can't see him (can he?). He desperately looks for her ( is like something inside of him made him feel certain she was there), he looks so desperate that the mother (holding the child), looking at him from a certain distance thinks he is crazy.

With no luck at all, he decides to go back to his house. On his way back, he can see the man on the potato colored vest, John, ( He is almost sure that is his name) who is still cleaning the ditch. Leonard asks John if he had seen Virginia (his wife), John wasn't sure though he described The strange-looking woman, in a rush,wearing a long coat ( He'll find out later that he was the last person who saw Virginia alive). Leonard is finally home, he tries to interrogate the maid over and over about his wife last moments, as if he wanted to know with detail even the most insignificant thing she did, which at that particular time seemed so important (at least to him). Then, Leonard runs upstairs, (he perfectly understood the letter, however, what if he was the crazy one and Virginia is just with Vanessa?, he knows that can not be possible, as he thought about it for a second time, it sounded so non-commonsensical, so illogical, but he wants to escape from reality or maybe what he doesn't like, is the idea of going through all this by himself... yes, that is why he is now running to Vanessa's room 'cause it's too much for him to handle), in front of her room, he takes a deep breath and opens the door just in time to find Vanessa deeply immersed in what she is reading. It's a letter, a blue envelope on the floor. He watches her tears coming out as she reads:

Dear Vanessa;

Since you were born you have given me nothing but happiness.

Being your mother was the best thing that ever happened to me.
I was the one who was supposed to care of you and not the other way around like it's been for the last years. God knows how much I love you, and loving you the way I do, all I want is for you to be happy, which is not going to happen if you have to deal with one of my crises again.

Oh my dear, they are coming back. I can hear their voices. I won't be able to escape this time. Although I'm going mad, I'm still sane enough to do the right thing: I have to end with my life!

Vanessa, please be strong, life is a precious gift. Too short for me to spoil it for you. My flesh won't be with you by the time you read this letter, but my love for you is immortal.

Always with you,

V.

Vanessa looks up and realizes that Leonard has been staring at her the whole time. Without thinking, they hug each other so tight, sorrowfully feeling the same way...

Happy-Virginia won't have to face one more crisis-, Sad-without her, emptiness is overtaking them-, Angry- how come they were not there when she needed them the most?-, Hurt-dealing with her every time she went up and down was rough, realizing that she's for ever gone is even more painful than they could ever imagine-, Terrified- not knowing how she died, was it a long agony?-, but probably the worst of all feelings is the growing sensation that part of them died along with her.

As days pass by, the grieving process becomes harder and harder besides their loss, they have to accept the fact that given the circumstances of her death they will not have the chance to get the last physical detachment-a burial- in a proper way like it is supposed to be (or so they thought).

TWO MONTHS LATER...

The man, with a red jacket, fishing, found her body. Her purple face, looks as beautiful as it was when she was focused in one of her writings, sitting in her habitual green chair inside her room, next to the bed. Now in a different kind of room, all her family and friends crying, her body surrounded by her favourite flowers: white roses... as Vanessa reads a passage from one of her novels. Leonard staring at his wife's corpse suddenly feels peace, the kind of peace he's been looking for since the day she left. He is crying though he could swear it feels like smiling. He is aware of Virginia death, she is no longer there with him (not alive), but images of her and flashes of sweet memories of a life together are so vivid, so strong that her spirit, her presence will remain within his heart, mind and soul now and beyond...
